St Mawes, Cornwall
Hotel Tresanton
The whitewashed Cornish village of St Mawes clings to a quiet headland in the wilds of the Roseland Peninsula. Here, Hotel Tresanton looks out to sea, and makes the perfect getaway for peace, great food and some time on the water (you can book a trip aboard the hotel’s classic yacht). The property, 29 rooms in the main house and adjoining former homes, is owned by the renowned hotelier Olga Polizzi, and her textiles reflect the colours of the seaside, with walls painted in flat eggshell tongue-and-groove. But what makes Tresanton so special is its Cornish artwork – you’ll find Patrick Heron rubbing shoulders with Barbara Hepworth. The restaurant is one of the best around. Head chef Paul Wadham’s daily changing menu uses fish, crustaceans, organic vegetables and meat from their Cornish butcher in modern dishes with a hint of classic Italian. And their house champagne is so good you’ll want to order a bottle – or two.
